Matooke Uganda approx. 1 kg – Uganda’s national dish starts here

In Uganda, matooke is eaten just like potatoes in Switzerland – every day, with almost everything, and it’s indispensable. The green plantains do not taste sweet but have a neutral, starchy flavour; they absorb the taste of sauces and stews perfectly and provide filling, long-lasting energy. Traditionally, they are steamed wrapped in banana leaves – the result is a soft, creamy side dish that goes well with everything.

What makes matooke special

  • Neutral and starchy like potatoes – no sweet banana aftertaste
  • Absorbs the flavour of groundnut stew, beans and meat sauces perfectly
  • Rich in potassium and vitamin B6 – a nutrient-rich side dish
  • Gluten-free and natural – with no additives whatsoever
  • Versatile: steam, boil, mash – anything goes

Cooking tip

Peel the matooke, wrap tightly in banana leaves and steam for 45–60 minutes until completely soft. Without banana leaves: cook in a saucepan with a little water over the lowest heat. Serve with groundnut stew, beans in sauce or grilled meat – the Ugandan national dish. Available from Osina Afro Market in Switzerland.
